A new ‘Stinkie’ on the block
Content:
The latest member to join the 170 or so species of Amorphophallus species is a new discovery from an island off the coast of Madagascar. Popularly known as ‘Stinkies’ or ‘Corpse flowers’, which is alluded to the stench emitted by many members in this genus to attract pollinators, the new species was a chance discovery by Greg Wahlert. Wahlert, a postdoctoral researcher from the University of Utah, was collecting violets when he stumbled upon what would turn out to be a new discovery.
