      Scientific Interest & Potential Value :
      Used for making necklaces. The striking variation in the patterns of the small shells makes it an excellent animal to study variation within populations.
      Conservation Notes :
      Populations along the original shores have been wiped out by reclamation. Some sites need to be designated as nature areas or marine protected areas, and legislation to protect marine life from over-collecting needs to be instituted.
