Ellobium scheepmakeri (Petit de la Saussaye, 1850)
  Family Name : Ellobiidae

  Taxonomic Group : Invertebrates (Mollusc)

Synonyms : Ellobium aurismalchi Linnaeus, 1758

Common Names : Mangrove Land Snail

Mangrove Land Snail
  • Ecology, Habitat & Location
    • Ecological Notes :
Back-mangroves, where it was found in the leaf litter of forest slightly above the highest reach of the tides.
      Habitats :
      Mangroves
      Distribution :
Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia. A tiny population has been rediscovered at Mandai. It also occurs on the northern shore of the Johor Straits, but this site (mangrove at the mouth of the Skudai river) has also deteriorated and the species may have disappeared there.
  • Conservation
    • Trends & Threats :
      Habitat destruction; perhaps water pollution.
Scientific Interest & Potential Value :
Larger land snails do have some commercial interest to collectors, though less so than the more spectacular marine ones. In other countries, the larger E. aurismidae is still collected for food.
      Conservation Notes :
The single remaining population needs protection. Reintroduction is also possible if a source can be found, as apparently suitable habitats for the adult do still exist. However, having planktonic larvae, the problem of water quality may be a contributing factor to its loss. Should water circulation in the Straits be improved, re-establishment of this and many other species may yet be possible.
  • Status
    • Singapore Red Data Book 2008 status :
      Critically Endangered (CR)
