Fluted Giant Clam
  • Ecology, Habitat & Location
    • Ecological Notes :
Lies on reef floor with valves opened to expose the colourful mantle.
      Habitats :
      Coral Reef, Marine
      Distribution :
Present throughout Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific.
  • Conservation
    • Trends & Threats :
Habitat degradation, collection for food and the marine curio trade.
Scientific Interest & Potential Value :
Has a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae dwelling within mantle tissue and thus ideal for culture as they do not require feeding but do require clean water and adequate sunlight. The culture of the species, which has been successful elsewhere, could meet the high demand for their adductor muscles as food.
      Conservation Notes :
Large specimens have virtually disappeared from Singapore waters. Young specimens are occasionally but infrequently seen. Translocation has been used as a technique to avoid loss of specimens from coastal development projects and collectors.
